Stewardship of Endowment and Gift Funds


*Course offered by Financial Training and Documentation, Office of the Controller.

Course Description:

Endowment Income and gifts for immediate use represent significant amounts of funding for most academic units, as well as some support units. To assist in managing these funds, this course provides information from the perspectives of the Treasurerâs Office, Development, and Accounting. Since some attendees need only the Treasury and Development information, the accounting information is presented last.

The following topics are covered:

  • Management and investment of the Endowment.
  • Setting up Endowment and Gift Funds.
  • Pending Endowments.
  • Differences between development funds and research funds.
  • Tax-related issues.
  • Gifts in Kind.
  • The ways Endowment and Gift funds are recorded in the General Ledger.

Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites for those attending only the Treasury and Development portion of the class.

Debits and Credits and Accounting at OSU are required for those staying for the Accounting portion.

Course Length:

Two four hour sessions. It is instructor-led, presented in a classroom setting.

Audience:

Any employee who works with Endowment Income and Expense funds and/or Gift (Development) funds should take this course.
