Services
Enterprise Networking supports some of the core services of the University network.
Enterprise Networking supports and maintains the campus Kerberos service that is used to provide name.n authentication for services around the university. If a department has questions concerning the service or how they could use the service please contact 8-help (8help@osu.edu).
Enterprise Networking offers several types of connectivity for departments. Within the main campus departments, have the choice between a 10, 100 or 1000 Mb building connection.
Off campus locations, including branch campuses can choose from T1 and DS3 connection options. The OSUNet connection request form (OSUNet Connection Request.pdf) can be used to request a connection, or please contact osunet@osu.edu if you have questions.
As part of the network transport provided with OSUNet all building connections support unicast and multicast traffic and are connected to Internet2.
For departments that are contemplating a network redesign we offer design consultation. To minimize the chances of choosing a design and or equipment options that may not be supported contact Enterprise Networking. (osunet@osu.edu).
By contacting us early in the process we can assist in creating a manageable, scalable and reliable network that meets your needs.
Enterprise Networking offers an after hours network engineer on call option. However, the after hours number is only provided to Department Network Administrators (DNAs) and secondary network contacts. Additionally, the number is to be used to report network issues only during the hours that the TSC is not open (as of August 1, 2004 the TSC is open 7 AM to 10 PM Monday through Friday and 4 PM to 10 PM Sunday). Any calls made to the number during the hours that the TSC is open will go unanswered.
Before responding to a call made to the after hours on-call telephone number, the Enterprise Networking staff member who is on-call will verify that the call is from a DNA or secondary contact. Calls made to this number by anyone other than the DNA or secondary contact will not receive a response.
NOTE- Enterprise Networking reserves the right to bill customers for any problem determined to be the result of a failure in the customers network or equipment. Billing will be based on the current OIT hourly charge for a network engineer (http://oit.osu.edu/rates.html).
To reduce the likelihood of being billed, it is strongly recommended that the DNA and/or other departmental support personnel perform first level trouble shooting before reporting an issue.
Besides providing network transport, Enterprise Networking also provides centralized network services. Domain Name Service (DNS) which provides name to network address translation, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) which allows a device to be configured automatically to use a network, and the Network Time Protocol (NTP) which can provides a common time for all devices connected on the network are provided as part of an OSUNet connection. If a department would like more information on these services please contact hostmaster@osu.edu.
If a department needs assistance in configuring network switches, our operations group on a cost recovery and time available basis will configure equipment to meet a departments needs. For more information about this service please contact 8help@osu.edu.
The Enterprise Networking VPN solution allows, students, faculty and staff, to gain 'local access' for university resources from any remote site(s) via other Internet service providers. This allows university users with a name.n to connect to the university and gain access for services that might not be allowed from off campus networks.
This service was deployed as a solution for some of the issues generated by the decision to block some network ports at the network border, the current list of blocked ports can be found at the CIO Security Group FAQ. If you would like to use this service the client is available from http://osusls.osu.edu/. If anyone has questions concerning the service or how to use the service please contact 8-help (8help@osu.edu)
