Computing Short Courses Schedule
Summer 2008


Important: To sign up for a course, click the "Register" link below. You will be asked to authenticate by entering your OSU Internet username and password and then you will be able to fill out an online registration form.

If you are a new student or faculty/staff member and haven't yet activated your username and password, do so via the Account Management page before registering for a short course.

Alternatively, if you are not affiliated with Ohio State, click the "No Username" link below.

Curriculum

The courses listed below are offered free of charge to faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Registration is required as seats are limited.

If you register for a class and then cannot attend, we ask that you send an email to trngnotif@osu.edu or cancel from the class through the registration process. This will free-up the reservation for another attendee. It is important for us to have an accurate seat count in the event there are potential enrollments on the "wait list".

Note: When accessing the class handouts, it is recommended to either use the "back arrow" browser function or the "open in new window/save target as" keyboard shortcuts so that you do not close or lose the Class Schedule page.

CLASS TITLE SESSION DATE TIME LOCATION

Web Design Ð Basic: This hands-on course provides an opportunity to learn basic XHTML commands and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for creating web pages. The course is taught using Windows Notepad. Topics include creating a web page; adding text, lists, links, tables, and images; and applying styles to change the appearance of page elements. General computer skills are required as well as a knowledge of how to use a web browser. This is a beginning level course intended for those with little or no experience using HTML/XHTML command codes or CSS. Handout and Data Files available.

FrontPage 2003 - Basic: This hands-on course covers the basics of building web pages without having to know HTML code. Topics include creating and manipulating text, adding a theme, graphics, links, and tables using the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor in FrontPage 2003. General computer skills are required as well as a knowledge of how to use a web browser. This is a beginning level course intended for those with little or no web design experience. Microcomputer Basics

CLASS TITLE SESSION DATE TIME LOCATION

Windows XP/MS Office - Overview: This hands-on course introduces the basics of the Windows XP Professional operating system including the Desktop and the Start Menu. Also included are overviews of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, enough so you begin using these applications when you complete the class. This is a beginning level course intended for those with little or no experience using Windows XP or MS Office 2003. Handout available.

Windows XP Professional - Advanced: This hands-on course provides an opportunity to learn advanced Windows XP skills. Topics include making system updates; using Device Manager; setting up network connections; securing your system; setting up personal networking; and improving system performance and troubleshooting problems. This course is intended for those with experience using Windows XP on more than a basic level. Handout available.

Multimedia Applications

PowerPoint - Basic: This hands-on course covers the basic features and capabilities of the software. Topics include PowerPoint navigation; creating a new presentation; using templates; adding color schemes; using views; entering notes; setting up the page; adding images; and using basic drawing tools. This is a beginning level course intended for those with little or no previous knowledge of PowerPoint.

Knowledge of a recent version of Windows is recommended. Handout available.

PowerPoint - Advanced: This hands-on course covers more advanced features of the software. Topics include advanced drawing tools; grouping objects; inserting movies; linking Excel charts; adding backgrounds; adding headers and footers; adding animations; and using a slide master. This course is intended for those with experience using PowerPoint or those who have taken the Basic level course.

Knowledge of a recent version of Windows is recommended. Handout available.

Statistical Applications

CLASS SESSION DATE TIME LOCATION

SAS for Windows - Introduction: This three-day, hands-on course provides an introduction to SAS. Topics covered include the data steps (reading, writing, and subsetting files, plus creating new variables and merging files); working with missing values; and understanding error messages as SAS log messages.

This is a beginning level course; no SAS experience is necessary. Handout and Data Files available.

Three sessions 07/14/08, 07/16/08 and 07/18/08 1:30-3:30 Registration Required
 

SPSS for Windows - Overview: This two-day, hands-on course focuses on easy ways to do statistical analysis in the Windows environment. Topics covered include navigating the Data and Variable View windows; defining a variable; entering data; saving and printing data; merging data files; opening an Excel or tab-delimited file; generating frequency and descriptive statistics; recoding and computing new variables; splitting a file; and selecting cases.

Although this is a beginning level course, prior experience using a recent version of Windows is recommended. Handout and Data Files available.
